What is eDNA?

eDNA is a digital tool for simulation of genetic engineering exercises, mainly directed towards learning situations at college level. eDNA makes it possible for you to carry out as many DNA-exercises as you want, with as many students as you like. This is often not economically feasible with real biotechnical exercises.

eDNA is designed to mimic real-life research with an intuitive interface that makes it easy to get started. Manuals are included with the eDNA software that describe the theoretical background of the exercises in detail.

eDNA makes it possible for your students to profit by your teaching in a completely new way. Many of the things carried out in a professional laboratory, your students can carry out in the computer - fingerprinting, electrophoresis etc.


How can I use eDNA with my students?

Along with the eDNA software, student manuals to several different exercises are included. The students carry out exercises that closely resemble real-life research, in order to get a feeling for how genetic engineering is carried out in the laboratory. The exercises are also designed to give basis for thorough analysis. In an educational situation you can let one or more students work with their computer(-s) where they carry out the included exercises.


Easy to use

eDNA is designed to function as an educational material where the emphasis is on learning and analysis. Hence much effort has been made to make the program as easy as possible to work with. As a teacher you are not supposed to spend a lot of time showing how the program works, instead you should be able to spend time on the studends’ learning. The eDNA software notices if you are doing something wrong and automatically gives advice about how the program should be used - so you can focus on your students and not on the computers.


Exercises

In eDNA you can carry out several different exercises, with many different genomes and enzymes. The software includes e.g. an electrophoresis apparatus, a PCR-apparatus and dishes for bacterial culturing. eDNA is non-linear, which means that genomes and enzymes may be combined in any chosen order.


eDNA is operated by putting a number of DNA samples on the work bench. These samples can then be cleaved by enzymes, ligated with other samples for cloning or applied in any of the machines.
