Review eDNA 2.0

In eDNA 2.0 the laboratory instructions are more distinct - brief, clear and with clear objectives.

The theory is separated from the lab instructions and can be studied in the appropriate context. In earlier versions there were larger bodies of text, which were heavy and perceived as difficult. In the current version, concepts that are pre-requisites of the labs are click-able for a quick repetition. As a consequence, every lab has become more self-instructive in a more accessible manner. Each student can study as much as is needed for that specific student. Most of the labs can also be done with different degrees of difficulty. It is now easier to solve paternity cases even within the frames of secondary-school science. In addition, if you have access to Adobe Acrobat the theory documents can easily be rearranged to fit a specific group of students.

The labs themselves contain more explanatory text, which reinforces the existing intuitive interface. Students rarely experience any difficulties with the “drag-and-drop” procedure. A possible difficulty might be to remember if all the enzymes have been added to the eppendorf tube – a problem which is solved with a small asterisk, which appears when all the ingredients are in place. Why doesn’t this functionality exist when running the PCR apparatus?

Just like earlier versions, it is possible to switch languages between English and Swedish, which is good since many schools give lectures in English.

There is no contrasting relationship between eDNA and real laboratory experiments - on the contrary: eDNA reinforces and deepens the understanding and does not need to interfere with the real experience in any way. For many schools, eDNA is the closest thing they will get to a PCR apparatus which makes the software fulfil an even bigger purpose.

At our school, we agree that eDNA is well invested money. The 2.0 version is more user friendly. The design with different levels of difficulty on the assignments makes eDNA accessible for students other than just those with a science major, which is appreciated in tough budget negotiations.
